San Diego Fire Safety
W.U.I. Wildfire Glazing
What San Diego homeowners need to know about fire-rated windows and doors in Wildland-Urban Interface zones.
April 2026 Code Update — Dual Tempered Glazing Now Required in 12 Independent Fire Districts
Effective April 2026, California updated its W.U.I. glazing requirements for 12 independent fire districts of San Diego County. In these districts, both panes of a dual-pane window assembly must now be tempered glass — a significant change from the previous standard, which only required a single tempered pane. This applies to new construction, retrofit window replacements, and qualifying remodels within the affected districts. Whether you are building new or replacing existing windows and doors, if your property falls within one of these 12 designated districts, your glazing must meet the new dual-tempered standard. Rockafellor Windows is fully up to date on these requirements and can confirm compliance for your specific address and project scope.

What is W.U.I.?
The Wildland-Urban Interface (W.U.I.) is where homes and communities meet or intermingle with undeveloped wildland vegetation. In San Diego County, millions of properties fall within designated W.U.I. zones — and building codes require fire-resistant construction in these areas.
Why Glazing Matters
Windows and doors are among the most vulnerable points of a home during a wildfire. Radiant heat and ember intrusion through standard glazing can ignite a home from the outside. W.U.I.-compliant glazing — including tempered, dual-pane, and fire-rated glass — is designed to withstand extreme heat exposure and reduce the risk of ignition.
California Requirements
California Building Code Chapter 7A mandates fire-resistant materials for new construction and significant remodels in State Responsibility Areas (SRA) and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ). This includes specific requirements for window glazing, frames, and door assemblies. Rockafellor Windows installs products that meet or exceed these standards.
